*Scolopax minor* is commonly known as the American woodcock but more rarely and entertainingly as the timberdoodle, bogsucker, hokumpoke and numerous other folk names. It is a plump, well-camoflagued shorebird that can be found across eastern North America. The long bill is specialized for eating earthworms. Starting in early spring, at dawn and dusk males perform fascinating courtship which include their characteristic "peent" call and aerial acrobatics that cause a whistling sound as air rushed over certain wing feathers.
