Asset Overview
Battle axe, or Boat axe, from Hol parish in Västergötland. This type of ceremonial axe has given name to the so-called Battle Axe Culture that appears in south and central Sweden towards the end of the Middle Neolithic, c:a 2700-2300 BC. The name stems from an earlier interpretation that the axes were used in battle, whereas a parallel name, Boat-axe, refers to their shape being reminiscent of a boat turned upside down.
