The belted kingfisher (*Megaceryle alcyon*) is a large, conspicuous water kingfisher found in North America.
The long, streamlined beak of kingfishers allows them to make a splashless transition from air to water when diving after prey. This remarkable ability was the inspiration for an innovative biomimietic solution to the sonic boom caused by the Shinkansen Bullet Train as it exited tunnels. Read more here:
