Asset Overview

Thomas Stoddart (b.1928 - d.1905) was an identity in Ballarat, best known for having floated more gold mining companies than any other local. Being associated with some of the largest and most successful Victorian mines made him a wealthy man and contributed to making Ballarat a prosperous city. The City of Ballarat memorialised Stoddart in marble in recognition of his generous donation of 12 statues to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens in 1884. This bust was commissioned after Stoddart's death in 1905, and was completed by the talented local sculptor FW Commons. It remains in its original position on the first floor landing at Ballarat Town Hall.
