Asset Overview

**ChM CM1545** - *Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris* The modern capybara is the largest living rodent in the world. Modern capybaras are native to South America and there are only two living species. However, capybara fossils are found in North American and The Charleston Museum has several teeth and skull fragments that were collected in South Carolina that are Pleistocene in age. This modern skull is used for comparison when discussing and identifying capybara material. This scan was collected as part of a student project at The Charleston Museum in association with the Business Innovation Lab at The Citadel.
