The eastern chipmunk (*Tamias striatus*) is a common rodent to find in woods and gardens across eastern North America. The name "chipmunk" comes from the Algonquian, probably Ojibwe word "ajidamoo" (in the Ottawa dialect "ajidamoonh"), which translates literally as "one who descends trees headlong."
