The giraffe is the tallest living terrestrial animal and largest ruminant. Much of the animal's height is in its neck which can be 6.6–7.9 ft long. The spine does not have more vertebra than other mammals but instead the cervical vertebrae are elongated (over 28 cm long each).
Giraffes are traditionally considered to be one species, *Giraffa camelopardalis*, with nine subspecies, but eight of these have been described as separate species based genetic and morphological differences.
