Asset Overview

*Calymene* Fossilised Trilobite 488-409 Million years old Found near montreal This fossil is a trilobite in the genus Calymene. Trilobites were a major group of animals that lived from approximately 520 - 250 million years ago. They were one of the most successful groups of early animals. Trilobites were creatures that were covered by a hard casing, with their legs and other body parts made of softer material and hidden underneath. The name trilobite comes from the fact that the body is divided into three main sections or “lobes”. These three segments are the ‘head’ known as the cephalon, the ‘body’ or thorax and the ‘tail’ or pygidium. Trilobites are thought to be most closely related to spiders, scorpions and horseshoe crabs out of all modern day animals. Press on each node for more information about that particular part of the fossil.
