Asset Overview

Skull of an adult green iguana (Iguana iguana, OUVC 10603), with annotations of some of the blood vessels. It was collected legally and euthanized humanely by Zoo Miami staff and provided to us for research and education. We scanned the head region on the OUµCT scanner in 2009 at a resolution of 90µm (0.090 mm). Scan data were imported into workstations running Avizo and digitally extracted the bones and soft tissues. The work on this project was done by Ruger Porter during his dissertation research on dinosaur blood vessels and their role in thermal physiology. This model is associated with a PLOS ONE article by Porter & Witmer (http://bit.ly/1LPST88). The original CT scan data can be downloaded on Dryad (http://bit.ly/1OOMCsm). This model can be downloaded here as an STL. For more 3D content on this and other iguanas, check out the Visible Interactive Iguana site: http://bit.ly/1LzIU6x. There you’ll find 3D PDFs for download that provide comparable content to what’s here but allowing the user more control.
