Asset Overview

So-called Lower Saxony horse. Coat of arms as a white steed on a red background. Historical: When Widukind (Duke of the Saxons) was defeated by Charlemagne (Karl d. Große) in the Saxon Wars (777-785) and accepted the Christian faith, King Charles gave him a white horse as a sign of conversion to the Christian faith. Later, the white horse in the red shield was found in various forms in coats of arms and seals of the Guelphs (Welfen = oldest still existing high noble family in Europe). Since 1952 official coat of arms of the state of Lower Saxony, capital Hanover. Material: bronzed metal on a marble base, height approx. 16 cm, circa 1955, private property.
