Asset Overview

Dubbed 'Lucky' the cat, this decidedly unlucky creature was buried under the foundation stone of Her Majesty's Theatre in Lydiard Street, Ballarat, in 1874. This was to satisfy a superstition that burying a dead cat under the foundations would bring good luck for the construction of the building. Lucky was rediscovered when extensions to the original building took place in the 1990s, and was then conserved in a box to stick around a while longer on display.
