**The Ludovisi Fury**

This sculpture has been variously interpreted as a **Sleeping Fury** or a **Medusa**. When it entered the Ludovisi Collection, the left side of the face was cut flat to improve stability.
In **Greek myth**, *Furies* were female chthonic dieties of vengeance.
