Asset Overview

This mammoth tusk was excavated from a 250,000 year old beach that runs beneath Brighton. The layers above this beach are rich in Ice Age fossils. So many mammoth bones fragments have been found here that local palaeontologist Gideon Mantell nickanmed them the 'Elephant Beds'. Object in Royal Pavilion & Museums' collections, digitised by the University of Brighton's Cultural Informatics Group.
