The two Lions of Saint Mark, heraldic animals of the Republic of Venice, stood above the main entrance of Vienna's Südbahnhof. One of the two sandstone lions, dating from 1872/1873, was moved to Laxenburg in 1959.
The Lion of Saint Mark is the symbol of Saint Mark the Evangelist, in illustrations of the Evangelist it is his attribute, it was the symbol of the Republic of Venice and today of the city of Venice.
