This is a statue of a kappa in front of the Mando Kappabashi Store in Kappabashi, Taito-ku, Tokyo. A kappa is a Japanese yokai, legendary or unidentified animal. They are childlike in build, and their entire body is green or red. They often have a dish on the top of their head. The dish is a circular, smooth, hairless area that is always wet with water, and is said to lose its power or die if the dish dries out or breaks. The mouth is a short beak, the back has a tortoise-like shell, the limbs are often said to have scrapers, and there are said to be three anuses.
