Opium weight

Bronze weight in the form of an animal (elephant). Called "opium weights" since colonial times, they come mainly from Burma and Laos. Today they are collected as art objects and replicas are sold as souvenirs. The first animal figurines of the Pyu are known from the years 100-400 AD, although it is uncertain whether they were already used as weights. The first documented references date back to the time of King Kyanzittha of Bagan. From the 16th century there are reports from travelers to Asia about the weights. H 2,9 cm. Bronzegewicht in Tierform (Elefant). Diese seit der Kolonialzeit genannten "Opiumgewichte" stammen vor allem aus Burma und Laos. Heute werden sie als Kunstgegenstände gesammelt und Nachbildungen als Souvenirs verkauft. Von den Pyu kennt man erste Tierfiguren aus den Jahren 100–400 n. Chr., wobei ungewiss ist, ob sie schon als Gewicht benutzt wurden. Erste Erwähnungen finden sich aus der Zeit König Kyanzittha von Bagan. Ab dem 16. Jh. gibt es Berichte von Asienreisenden über die Gewichte.
