Porcupinefish (family Diodontidae) differ from pufferfish (family Tetraodontidae) in that they have large conspicuous spines visible while they are not inflated. The spines of pufferfish are hidden in and against their skin until they expand their bodies. The term blowfish is apllied to both groups.
