Takamura Koun(1852~1934) “Saigo Takamori”1898. Meiji-era sculptor Takamura Koun (1852-1934), considered the father of Japanese modern sculpture, studied wood carving under Takamura Toun, a sculptor of Buddhist images. Influenced by the realism of Western carving Koun contributed to modernize traditional Japanese wood carving.
