Takamura Koun(1852~1934)

Meiji-era sculptor Takamura Koun (1852-1934), considered the father of Japanese modern sculpture, studied wood carving under Takamura Toun, a sculptor of Buddhist images. Influenced by the realism of Western carving Koun contributed to modernize traditional Japanese wood carving. He produced the wooden models for the bronze statues of Saigo Takamori (1898), which stands in Tokyo’s Ueno Park, and of Kusunoki Masashige (1900), which adorns the Imperial Plaza.
