Samurai Tomoe Gozen

Background: Tomoe Gozen was a late twelfth-century samurai warrior. She lived circa 1157 to 1247 and was known for her bravery. She served Minamoto no Yoshinaka, a general of the late Heian period of Japanese history, in the Genpei War shogunate Japan. Minamoto no Yoshinaka was a member of the Minamoto samurai clan. At this time exists a group of female warriors, also known as Onna-bugeisha. These women engaged in battle alongside samurai men and were trained in use weapons to protect household, family, and honour in times of war.
