Asset Overview

This monument was sculptured by Bruce Walker of Kirriemuir. It's is dedicated to Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868 to 1912) and Dr E. A. Wilson (1872 to 1912). It was erected in 2012 to commemorate to 100 year anniversary of the ill fated 1910-1912 race to the South Pole. Scott and his crew all died on the return journey after being beaten to pole by a team of Norwegians. On 17 March 1912, Oates, a member of Scott's team, was suffering from severe frostbite and left the tent in a blizzard and said to the remaining team "I am just going outside, I may be some time". He was never seen again. The remaining members of the team including Scott and Dr Wilson all perished in the tent at the end of March 1912. Their bodies were found 12 November that year and they were wrapped in their tents and buried where they died. http://www.rmg.co.uk/explore/sea-and-ships/facts/explorers-and-leaders/scott
