When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif is probably the most controversial lemon squeezer design out there. The Juicy Salif became a bestselling item for Alessi and a Design icon of the late 20th century for its futuristic and disruptive look. However, its functionality is debatable. On that matter, Starck stated that the intent behind the product was to inspire conversation rather than to be functional. With that, the designer implies that objects can have emotional functions as well as practical ones. And that products can be signified from other perspectives such as from the symbolic, philosophical, and cultural levels. This explains why Juicy Salif still remains a treasured decoration item for Design enthusiasts all around the world.
