Asset Overview
The story of SP Crater’s name is credited to C.J. Babbitt (of famed Babbitt Ranches), back in the late 1800s. He climbed the cinder cone volcano 25 miles north of Flagstaff and observed its dark-colored lava flow extending to the north for about 4.3 miles. He thought it like a chamber pot that had been spilled.
However, good ol' C.J. didn’t name it Chamber Pot Crater, or even Poop Pot Crater. He named it something "similar", which doesn't take much imagination to figure out. Map-makers making maps of the San Francisco Volcanic Field refused to print the given name. So the USGS shortened Babbitt’s name to "SP Crater". The name remains.
Geologists remark on how well-preseved this volcano is, seemingly created yesterday and most-recently featured in theaters and Netflix in such films as "Is Genesis History?" with Dr. Del Tackett. You can hike the dormant volcano and its lava flow following a 19-mile dirt road that connects west from US 89.
