Asset Overview

Painted Hand Pueblo, in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, is a prehistoric habitation with at least eight rooms, three towers, two kivas, two plazas, two middens (refuse deposits) and eleven rock art panels. The site was constructed and occupied during the Pueblo II and Pueblo III periods (AD 1100-1300). The model shown is of Tower 1, a circular structure which is constructed of pecked and shaped sandstone blocks and is situated on top of a large sandstone boulder. The extant structure has an interior diameter of 2.4 meters and measures approximately 4.5 meters high, with a maximum of 35 courses of McElmo style "core-and-veneer" masonry.
