When Strat Smith was named NCTA executive secretary for the cable industry, he called a meeting. The fledgling industry needed to start thinking about national advertising and the conversation turned to the possibility of a logo or symbol. John Smith, from the NCTA PR firm, suggested something similar to the Electric Utility industry's "Reddy Kilowatt" icon, a smiling stick figure drawn in lightning bolts and a light bulb head. Mr. Smith suggested a similar figure but with a TV tower body, coaxial cable arms and a picture tube head. John Smith went off to sketch what would become the cable industry's new mascot, Abel Cable. Later Abel was joined by Ima Set.
