The prootic is a complicated braincase element located caudal to the trigeminal foramen. The prootic houses the inner ear and is pierced by cranial nerves VII and VIII. Medially, the element contacts the cerebellum. In crocodilians, the quadrate sutures over the lateral surface of the prootic so that only a small rostrolateral slip of it is visible. Our medical CT data really do not do this element the anatomical justice it deserves as it's got several very thin laminae as well as cartilaginous portions. This may be updated with microCT data in the future.
