Asset Overview

The quadrate is a flat, complicated element and part of the suspensorium. During crocodyliform evolution, it formed extensive sutures with the pterygoid and braincase. Its ventral process connects to the articular of the mandible to form the jaw joint. Its otic process, where it is connected to the squamosal is also covered with cartilage and is the primitive otic joint. The rostral portion of the element overlaps the prootic and forms part of the maxillomandibular foramen. The dorsal half of the element forms the floor of the external auditory meatus of the ear. Much of the ventrolateral surface of the quadrate serves as attachment for jaw muscles which leave the pronounced adductor tubercle.
