Asset Overview

U.S. Continental Congressman. He was a successful merchant who built the wharf in Charleston, South Carolina, that still bears his name. He served as a Captain in the South Carolina Militia in expedition against the Cherokees in 1759, was a member of the House of Commons, in 1757 and a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress, in 1765. In 1774, he was elected to the First Continental Congress, serving until 1776. He also was one of the founders and leaders of the Charleston Sons of Liberty, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Brigadier General in command of the 1st South Carolina Regiment, Continental Army, (1776-83). After the war, he was a member of the South Carolina's House of Representatives, served as Lieutenant Governor of the South Carolina, (1778-80) and was a member of the state convention in 1788 and voted for ratification of the U.S. Constitution. After retiring from civil service he was a framer until his death from an accidental fall at the age of 81.
