Lithic Point Discovered By Volunteer

This lithic point was discovered at a nature preserve in Orange County, Florida. A volunteer was helping to survey a portion of the site and spotted this artifact. They immediately marked the location and brought the artifact to the preserve staff, who contacted us at FPAN. This lithic point helps give a date of prehistoric occupation at the site, something archaeologists did not have before. The lithic point is a Middle Archaic (5000BCE-3000BCE) Newnan point; meaning humans were occupying this area upwards of 7,000 years ago! Many thanks to the volunteer and preserve staff who did the right thing by preserving context information about this artifact. The Newnan point will be incorporated into a display at the preserve highlighting Native American history at the site.
