Northern Flicker (Colaptes Auratus)
Accession #: 137.13
This polychromatic woodpecker resides all over North America, preferring to stay in the United States year-round and only migrating to Canada to breed. What is unusual is its slightly curved beak, a strange straight for woodpeckers. Preferring to hunt from the ground, they use their bill to dig for beetles and other insects. The underside color of their wings varies depending on what part of the United States they are from, yellow for eastern birds and red for westerners.
