Evidence of the German occupation is visible beneath the streets of Paris. After WWI, bunkers and shelters began to be prepared throughout Paris to protect the population against bomb and gas attacks of a future war. Three of those shelters still exist in the catacombs, one of which is the bomb-proof bunker beneath the Montaigne high school, requisitioned in WWII by the Luftwaffe as their command post.
It's a large room with some nice murals.
The area still has german signs painted (arrows to avoid being lost, "Rauchen Verboten" or "Ruhe" i.e. "Smoking prohibited" and "Silence"). Electric wires and the remains of a chemical toilet are still here. Crazy to think what happened there 75 years ago.
