Asset Overview

66 mobile antennas arid plateau in the Atacama desert, in Chile, all working together to collect the signals that allow us to trace stars and galaxies even very far from us. This is the heart of Alma, the Atacama large millimeter array, the largest and most sophisticated space observatory on Earth for observing radio waves. In this short video we can see one of the telescopes with an altazimuth mount. The movement of the fork (rotation along the horizontal axis) allows you to follow the star from east to west. the movement of the parabola is the axis of elevation. That is, it raises the telescope if the observed object is east of the meridan and lowers it if the object is west. We can also see the animation of how photons are reflected and therefore the path that a beam travels before reaching the detector.
