American Pygmy Kingfisher MLZ - 9833[](http://arctos.database.museum/guid/MLZ:Bird:9833) 18 August 1933 Rio Napo, Abajo, Guamayacu Napo, Ecuador Collected by Carlos Olalla Physical specimen held by the Moore Laboratory of Zoology, Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA The American Pygmy Kingfisher is the smallest kingfisher out of the five species in the New World. These tiny orange-and-green Kingfishers inhabit shaded areas around streams and rivers throughout their range. Like other New World Kingfishers, the sexes can often be told apart by the presence or absence of a band on the underparts. This specimen has a dark green band across the chest, indicating it is a female.
