The American Pygmy Kingfisher is the smallest kingfisher out of the five species in the New World. These tiny orange-and-green Kingfishers inhabit shaded areas around streams and rivers throughout their range. Like other New World Kingfishers, the sexes can often be told apart by the presence or absence of a band on the underparts. This specimen has a dark green band across the chest, indicating it is a female.
