Asset Overview
Augen gneiss outcrop, near village entrance below the old chalets, Saas Fee, Valais, Switzerland. The gneiss contains some angular porphyroclasts of feldspar, but most are deformed into augen, as are small quartz lenses. The gneiss also contains cm to dm thick veins of quartz that are occasionally offset by small faults and isoclinally folded. The foliation of the gneiss is parallel to the isoclinal folds limbs. These gneisses are part of the crystalline basement of the Mischabel Nappe. Lat 46° 6'32.23"N, Lon 7°55'46.14"E, elevation 1810 m.
