Asset Overview

This is part of the lower jaw of* Megalonyx jeffersoni*. Megalonyx is one of the species of giant ground sloth found in the fossil record of Orange County. This specimen was found in Quaternary alluvium during construction of the Trabuco Retention Basin in the City of Irvine. Megalonyx jeffersoni was named after then vice president Thomas Jefferson, who was an avid naturalist.
