Asset Overview
Silicified log about half a meter in diameter, along the "Crystal Forest" trail, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA. These logs are more than 200 million years old. The fractures perpendicular to the long dimension of the log testify to burial in horizontal position: the overburden caused the silicified log to extend horizontally and crack while still deeply buried. When the logs - which are much harder than the surrounding rocks - are again exposed by erosion, they break apart along these cracks. Lat 34°51'55.11"N, Lon 109°47'16.44"W, elevation 1697 m.
