Xenops are a member of the family Furnariidae, which is host to a great array of neotropical species. Xenops are small, nuthatch-like birds with short upturned bills. The Plain Xenops is the least-marked of the Xenops, but is the most widely distributed, ranging from Mexico to the atlantic forests of Southeast Brazil.
