Many species of the family Pocilloporida are brooders, meaning they reproduce by internal fertilization (as opposed to broadcast spawning, whereby coral colonies release gametes, i.e. eggs and sperm, into the water for external fertilization). Brooded larvae are competent to settle upon release, so brooding species are more capable of local retention on a reef.
