The Rusty-winged Barbtail is part of the family Furnariidae, which contains more than 300 species. This incredibly large and diverse family is only found in the neotropics. While almost all members of this family are similar shades of brown, their diversity comes into play with their specialized bills and tails.
The Rusty-winged Barbtail is the only member of its genus, *Premnornis* , and sports a short, straight bill with a pointed ruddy colored tail.
