Asset Overview

This stone was brought into Japan from Antarctica in 1966 by a crew of the Fuji icebreaker ship, after having voyaged for the 7th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. It was dedicated to Fujisan Hongu Sengen-taisha Shrine. The talisman of Sengen-taisha as the guardian deity of voyage was enshrined in the Fuji's ship shrine Sengen-taisha is the head shrine of about 1,300 Sengen shrines nationwide, and is registered as a World Culture Heritage site as one of the constituent assets of "Mt. Fuji - the object of worship and source of art." It is considered that the strong winds of Antarctica, sometimes reaching speeds of 100m/s, made indentations in the surface of the rock, and the sand grains carried by the winds further cut the indentations, gradually deepening them.
