Joint sets and normal faults. Joint formation here is due to multiple tectonic episodes, but the normal faults in the west are due to the presence of thick salt in the Paradox formation at depth, which tends to flow towards the Colorado river. Erosion along the joints forms the spires ("Needles"). Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA.
