This is the highly worn shell of a whelk, a marine sea snail in the family Buccinidae. There are three species of whelk in Rhode Island: channeled whelk (Busycotypus canaliculatus), knobbed whelk (Busycon carica), and lightning whelk (Busycon sinistrum).
