The 13,000 year old basaltic tephra of Black Point exhibiting soft-sediment deformation. The corssbedding in the sediments suggest these were once parallel, planar layers of sediment washed in to Glacial Lake Russel (Mono Lake) by the ancestral Mill Creek. Earthquakes caused the slightly dipping sedimentary layers to slide over a weaker layer towards the center of the lake, causing the deformation.
