Asset Overview

This single crystal of [grossular](http://webmineral.com/data/Grossular.shtml) is part of a collection of 50 mineral specimens purchased from the Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd company (Chelsea, England) in the early 1960s. Grossular is one of the varieties of the garnet mineral group with the formula Ca₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃. Given the pale colouration, it is likely almost the pure end-member in composition. Garnet crystals belong to the cubic crystal system, and this specimen is an almost perfect rhombic dodecahedron form (12 faces). Although garnet can crystallise in a variety of forms, this is the most common. The crystal is 20 mm in maximum dimension.
