This paraboloid is constructed from affine hexagons (6 sided polygons). The three polygons at the center are all congruent and mutually orthogonal although the geometric construction technique does not require them to be so.
When affine hexagons are used in this construction technique, the result is a paraboloid. When affine polygons with more than 6 sides are used in this construction technique, the result is a hyperboloid.
