Asset Overview

This low metamorphic grade sample of quartzite comes from the Pilbara Craton of Western Australia. The protolith was likely a banded chert. It is now an L-tectonite dominated by a prominent stretching lineation, but has no tectonic foliation. A primary foliation (likely bedding) can be seen in an end-on view of the sample (tagged in the model). Although this is a small specimen, large outcrops of this occur in the field, where the lineation is steeply plunging. Local miners in the past have built 'log cabins' from this material for shelter.
