This is a plastinated pediatric heart that was donated for research after a heart transplant. The donor was a 6 year old female with Dilated Cardiomyopathy. This condition means that the heart muscles never developed properly, and so the heart could not perform its job. In order to provide oxygen to the patient’s body, they needed to use a double Berlin bi-ventricular assist device to mechanically circulate their blood. The cannulas connected to the heart are visible in this 3D scan, which used scanning spray to facilitate model capture. This heart uses reference ID: Heart0297.
We partner with [LifeSource](https://www.life-source.org/) to receive donated organs deemed not viable for transplant.
