This is a perfusion fixed human heart that was donated for research. The donor was a 57 year old male with a history of hypertension and strokes. This model was created to highlight right atrial anatomy and an atrial septal defect. The tricuspid valve is apparent, connecting the Right Atrium to the Right Ventricle. The atrial septum (a wall between the right and left sides of the heart) in this heart has a hole, leading to oxygenated blood from the left side of the heart mixing with the deoxygenated blood in the right side. ASDs of various kids can affect up to 20% of the population and range in severity from unnoticeable to life-threatening.
We partner with [LifeSource](https://www.life-source.org/) to receive donated organs deemed not viable for transplant.
