"The Initials A.L. are Etched on the Hilt."
Ashkandi is a iconic weapon from the early days of World of Warcraft. It is suspected that the Intitials "A.L." are for Anduin Lothar, Legendary Hero of the Alliance who perished in a battle against the Horde in the Burning Steppes near Blackrock Mountain. This would answer tie into who "The Brotherhood" is as Anduin Lothar was markedly the only known & most notable member of The Brotherhood of the Horse.
This makes the original design of the sword quite interesting as it certainly screams "Black Dragon" more than "Knight of Stormwind". So the name and Flavor text may just be that, Flavor.
The Sword is also featured in the Burning Crusade intro cinematic very briefly as it was weilded by the orc as he slashed a naga in half.
It is also featured as part of one of the Skins to the Playable Hero character "Sonya" in Heroes of the Storm.
