Asset Overview

My submission for the exercise Bake a Hard Surface Normal Map for the course Normal Map Modelling for Games at CGCookie. Process: Edited the high poly mesh so that no details that were to be baked to the mesh were at 90 degrees to the face. Added a bevel modifier, marked edges that were to be marked sharp for smooth shading. For the low poly model, altered the topology to use quads so that subdivision surface would work correctly. Created a linked duplicate for the cage and added a displacement modifier to the cage. Unwrapped the UVs for the low poly mesh, ensured that islands were seamed to avoid warping the map. Created a 8k x 8k 32bit float sRGB image for the normal map. Reduced to 8 bit, deleted flat face dithering and scaled down to 2048x2048 in Photoshop. EDITED: Topology changes to reduce artifacts.
