A half-basket-hilt sword found in France of the 18th century, currently being displayed in the Royal Armouries in Britain. Very interestingly, the basket hilt looks like a English design of almost 100 years earlier, close to the iconic Mary Rose sword. (George Silver's fencing manual portraits sword of a similar design and he is more than 100 years ago.) Other period basket hilt swords in the British empire would feature either side bars on a slot hilt (like the 1788 Heavy Cavalry Sword) or perforated plates instead of bars on the side (Scottish broadsword). Many swords like this had a asymmetric hilt so that they could be worn more comfortably on the left side of the body.
